Learning more about racism starts with listening to Black people.

On October 25 and again on November 8, at 2pm, Black panelists from the Grace Church and School community will talk about racism in a program titled “Black Voices at Grace: How Racism Impacts the Grace Community.” Speakers will describe how they experience racism in their everyday lives at work, in the community, and at Grace.

The sessions, which will take place over Zoom, will be moderated by the Rev. Sherman Hicks, retired bishop of the ELCA Metro Chicago Synod. Grace’s Justice and Peace Committee and Women@Grace are sponsoring the webinars.
The two sessions will feature two different sets of panelists, covering a wide variety of topics, including policing and law enforcement, raising children in the Oak Park community, workplace issues, and racism within church communities.

As we at Grace react to events unfolding in the news we strive to follow Jesus and live as part of God’s kingdom. We seek to become, as it says in the Church Council statement from last June, “a more faithful witness to God’s wide welcome in Christ.” Listening to Black voices from our community is an important starting point for that work.
