Music and worship

In worship we proclaim God's Word and celebrate the sacraments. As we worship together, we express our identity as the people of God and celebrate our unity with Christians across the ages. As Lutherans we follow traditional liturgical forms and strive to bring our very best to God with excellence in music, preaching, and other facets of worship.

Worship at Grace includes hearty congregational singing, along with outstanding music from choirs, organ, and vocal and instrumental soloists. Bach Cantata Vespers are another important part of the music ministry.

Senior Choir
This all-volunteer mixed-voice ensemble sings at either the 8:30 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. worship service on most Sundays from September through May. The Senior Choir also sings for festival services and the monthly Bach Cantata Vespers. The choir rehearses on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. (7:45 p.m. during Advent and Lent).

The Senior Choir is directed by Grace’s Cantor, Michael Costello. Singers from outside the Grace congregation are welcome to join and participate. Previous choral or musical experience is helpful. For more information, contact Grace.

Joyful Voices
Joyful Voices includes singers in middle school and high school. The choir rehearses on Wednesdays during the school year, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and sings in worship services on Sunday mornings or Wednesday evenings approximately once a month. For more information contact director Gwen Gotsch.

School Choirs
Grace School students participate in choir as part of the music curriculum, singing for congregational worship services several times during the school year. School choirs also sing for school chapel services and other musical events. Students in grades 7-8 may choose to be part of the handbell ensemble. All of these groups rehearse during the school day.

The Children’s Christmas Eve Services, at 4:15 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on December 24, are one of the highlights of children’s music-making at Grace. For these services, Grace Lutheran School students are joined by children from the Sunday School and confirmation classes at Grace. More than 150 children participate in the choirs for these services.

Handbells
The Adult Handbell Ensemble rehearses on Thursday evenings, from 6:30 to 7:30. For more information about this group, contact director Lisa Wolfanger.

Organ
The organ at Grace Church uplifts congregational worship and adapts well to the performance of historic and contemporary literature. The original E. M. Skinner instrument, was installed in 1931 and updated in 1956 by the Schlicker Organ Company. Berghaus Pipe Organ Builders rebuilt the organ again in 1986, revoicing the existing pipework and adding new ranks and a new console.
