Transfiguration of Our Lord, February 23, 2020
Holy Communion at 8:30 and 11am
Prayer of the Day
O God, in the transfiguration of your Son you confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the witness of Moses and Elijah, and in the voice from the bright cloud declaring Jesus your beloved Son, you foreshadowed our adoption as your children. Make us heirs with Christ of your glory, and bring us to enjoy its fullness, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Sermon
"Fire on the Mountain"
Matthew 17:1-9
Six days later, Jesus takes his friends up the mountain. Six days later than what? Peter’s confession that Jesus is the Messiah, and Jesus’ rebuke of Peter for misunderstanding what being Messiah means. Jesus’ messianic mission is one of suffering love, not instant glory. Just as God had Moses wait six days before entering God’s glory, so too does Jesus give Peter six days to prepare for the Transfiguration. Six days to make sense of the fact that the glory he is about to see is a glory that will go back down the mountain toward Jerusalem and death. Like Peter, we behold Jesus’ glory on the mountain. Like Peter, we are prepared in this time to understand what this means. The light on the mountain shows forth who Jesus is; his trip down the mountain teaches us why he came: to be a light in dark places, to create life in the midst of death.
