Holy and righteous God, you are the author of life, and you adopt us to be your children. Fill us with your words of life, that we may live as witnesses to the resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

We find ourselves again with the disciples on that first Easter Sunday. Jesus has just revealed himself to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Suddenly, he appears to his friends back in Jerusalem. They fear he is a ghost, and who can blame them! Jesus is no apparition, however; he is really there. Alive. Resurrected. Both to prove the point and because he was hungry, he asks for food. He eats the fish, something no ghost would do! Why, we might ask, does it matter? At the heart of the Christian faith is not a shadowy hope for eternity; at the center stands resurrection. God would let nothing of Jesus be lost. Not his flesh; not his wounds. He is raised; transformed but truly present. Christ died and lives again to save and redeem our whole being, affirming just how much we, bodies and all, matter in this world and the next. As John reminds us today, we don’t know the future but we can trust that it is in God’s hands, and that we are God’s children now.
