"Festival Foolishness"
John 2:13-22; 1 Corinthians 1:18-25
Whenever Jesus goes to Jerusalem, the purpose is the same: He comes to overturn the wisdom of this world with the foolishness of God. His first visit anticipates his final visit, both at Passover. Seeing his Father’s house turned into a marketplace, he overturns the tables of the moneychangers and drives them out, along with their sacrificial animals. Later, he will overturn the Temple itself. It is Jesus, not the Temple or its sacrifices, who is the presence of the living God who brought the people out of Egypt long ago. Now, in the foolish act of throwing his life away, he overturns death and drives out the powers of sin and evil. Today, Jesus comes to overturn the broken, oppressive systems of this world as he drives us from death to life.
