Prayer of the Day
Lord God, your lovingkindness always goes before us and follows after us. Summon us into your light, and direct our steps in the ways of goodness that come through the cross of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Scripture readings
Isaiah 9:1-4
Psalm 27:1, 4-9
1 Corinthians 1:10-18
Matthew 4:12-23

Sermon
"What’s the Catch?"
Matthew 4:12-23
Many of us recall the old Sunday school song, “I Will Make You Fishers of Men.” Happily, our vision of this verse has become broader and more inclusive. Today, we hear Jesus call Simon Peter and Andrew to “fish for people.” This is better, but we are still left wondering what Jesus means. Certainly he doesn’t intend for us to start casting nets in the street. Are we to go and catch people? Yes, but in ways much more broad than we imagine. First, Jesus doesn’t just say to fish. He commands us to follow. We who were caught in sin and death are now caught up in the mission of Jesus. And now we go to fish, following Jesus’ example. What does Jesus do? Matthew tells us: Jesus proclaimed the good news and healed all who were brought before him. In this sin-sick, sorrowing world, this is how we follow. This is how we fish.
