Prayer of the Day
Almighty Creator and ever-living God: we worship your glory, eternal Three-in-One, and we praise your power, majestic One-in-Three. Keep us steadfast in this faith, defend us in all adversity, and bring us at last into your presence, where you live in endless joy and love, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Scripture
Isaiah 6:1-8
Psalm 29:1-11
Romans 8:12-17
John 3:1-17
Sermon
"How Can These Things Be?"
John 3:1-17; Isaiah 6:1-8
Isaiah, brought into God’s holy presence, is terrified. Nicodemus, in the presence of Jesus, doesn’t understand what’s happening. We, like the Romans to whom Paul writes, feel cast aside, orphaned. The surprise ending in each of our readings today is that God is a God for us. In the mystery of God’s love for us, we see the full majesty of God at work in the Christ who is lifted up on the cross. Through him, we are cleansed, invited into the heavenly throne room not as guests but as newborn children of God, born of the Spirit to experience communion with God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and forever.
