Prayer of the Day
Almighty Creator and ever-living God: we worship your glory, eternal Three-in-One, and we praise your power, majestic One-in-Three. Keep us steadfast in this faith, defend us in all adversity, and bring us at last into your presence, where you live in endless joy and love, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Sermon
"In Sure and Certain Hope"
Romans 5:1-5, John 16:12-15
Not long ago, we gathered with family to inter the remains of Erika’s grandmother, who died last year. I wasn’t leading the service, but I could have done so from memory, particularly the words spoken as the urn was placed in a freshly dug hole: “In sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ…” Standing in the rain with ashen remains seems an odd situation in which to invoke sure and certain hope, but that’s what we say. Why? Because we are people who live from the perspective of the end. And the end is not death. The end is life without end. We are justified by faith in the crucified and risen Lord, sent by the Father. This faith is stirred within us by the Spirit. It is faith that empowers us to live with a transcendent view of reality, in which the sufferings of this world become a cause for boasting. This hope does not disappoint, for it flows from the Triune life of God.
