Isaiah 55:10–11 and Matthew 13: 1–9, Matthew 13:18–23
The Word of God is at the center of today’s readings. Isaiah 55 tells us that God’s word will accomplish that which God purposes and succeed in the thing for which God sent it. St. Paul proclaims in Romans 8 that Christ—the Word made flesh (John 1)—was sent “so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” In the Gospel reading we hear the parable of the sower and the seed, which concludes with Jesus’ promise that, “As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.” Because of our baptism into Christ’s death and resurrection we are united with God and, therefore, are called to be Christ’s presence in the world, sowing the word and proclaiming that “the kingdom of heaven is near.”
