Prayer of the Day
O God, our leader and guide, in the waters of baptism you bring us to new birth to live as your children. Strengthen our faith in your promises, that by your Spirit we may lift up your life to all the world through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Sermon
"I Lift up My Eyes"
John 3:1-17
The psalmist cries out, scanning the horizon. It’s hard to tell if it is a cry born of terror or hope. Perhaps both? From where will help come? From the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 121 grounds our other readings for the day, naming two great truths. First, we are in trouble and, second, help is on the way. Near the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, we meet Nicodemus, a Pharisee who recognizes the trouble but can’t yet see the help that is coming. He comes to Jesus by night and Jesus invites him to believe in the Son of Man. Where will you see him? There, on a hill, on a stark cross interrupting the horizon. Out of this death comes the new birth from above. Look up and live! Help is on the way.
