"Courage in Captivity"
Luke 8:26-39
This week at Vacation Bible School, 107 children travelled to Babylon to learn the story of Daniel, a story of how to have courage in captivity. Fortunately, it is unlikely that any of us will need to keep the faith in the face of fiery furnaces or ravenous lions. Our captivity looks different. Like the Gerasene demoniac, we are bound by forces less visible. His life was overrun by demonic forces. Ours might be, too. Or perhaps we are bound by illness, grief, or loneliness. We are all bound by sin. We are all captive to death. The demons in our story today ask Jesus, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?” The answer is that Jesus has everything to do with us, for he is both with us in our captivity and is the One who shows us the way out. Through his death, we are forgiven and set free. Take courage, and live in this freedom!
