Sermon
"Amidst the Wolves"
Matthew 9:35-38; Matthew 10:1-23
We have emerged from the season of Easter and celebrated the mystery and the majesty of the Triune God. Where next? We are propelled into the mission of the church by turning to an earlier section of Matthew’s Gospel. Where does the risen Christ call us? Where does the Spirit send us? Into the midst of wolves, like sheep who will suffer betrayal, hatred, and persecution. Sounds fun! And what shall we take with us? Nothing! As far as recruiting pitches go, this one is lacking. But here’s the thing: Jesus isn’t asking you to sign up. He has already claimed you through his death and resurrection. You don’t have a choice, you have a call. So go. Preach the good news. Heal the sick and cast out demons. Help the helpless. The risen Christ is calling you to serve a hurting world.
