Sermon
"Hidden in Plain Sight"
Twice in our Gospel today, John announces the presence of Jesus as Jesus is walking by. It's almost as if Jesus is trying to mind his own business and keep a low profile, when suddenly John calls attention to him. We don't know for sure, of course, but it's interesting to imagine the context. Today's passage is one of the first of many examples in John's Gospel that point particularly to Jesus at work in ways that we might not otherwise see or understand. Today, John the Baptist declares and exclaims twice, "Look, here he is! Here is the Lamb of God." This Lamb of God is just walking around, blending in, part of the scene. He doesn't announce himself. He doesn't draw attention to himself. He's simply around. Hidden, you might say. Today, this Lamb of God is present in much the same way. Though now we know the rest of the story, Jesus still chooses to remain hidden in our midst, and we are the ones who point to and announce his presence — in water, bread, wine, Word, in each other ... and in the people who are just walking around and blending in to the scene.
