Sermon
"Come and See"
John 1:43-51
At least one of the people Jesus called that day was not imagining that this would go anywhere. They were about as ordinary as you could get, and Jesus himself was from the backwoods town on Nazareth. Their expectations probably did not amount to much. After all, “what good could come out of Nazareth,” Phillip asks. This Jesus leads these ordinary people to all sorts of unexpected places, leading ultimately to a cross outside of the city. What good could come out of that? And Jesus calls us too, especially when we feel ordinary, like we do not have what it takes, when our expectations are slim, when we do not measure up, when our faith is fleeting and we feel weak. There empowered by the Spirit Jesus leads us to unexpected places, even to the place of death, and through the eyes of faith we find our expectations overturned again and again. Come and see.
