Prayer of the Day
Everlasting God, in your endless love for the human race you sent our Lord Jesus Christ to take on our nature and to suffer death on the cross. In your mercy enable us to share in his obedience to your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Sermon

"Life in the Very Place of Death"
Mark 14:1-15:47
Jesus’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem accompanied by shouts of hosanna gives way to his lifeless body being laid in a tomb. The contrasts are stark. And a whole lot takes place in between. All in one liturgy. There are palm branches, powers conspiring against him, accusations, betrayal, and mocking; all leading to the God forsaken place of the cross where he dies as a criminal. And, yet, where the world turns away we look and see our salvation. It is not in the procession of a king but in a death on a cross that we see God most clearly. From there we trust that Jesus comes to all our places of death and all the God forsaken places of this world to give his body as life for all. As we enter Holy Week we marvel again at the mystery of Christ’s passion and death and await his resurrection that renews the face of the earth.
