We’re almost there! Christmas is just around the corner. The world is pregnant with possibility. So, too, are Elizabeth and Mary. The Forerunner and the Messiah grow in their wombs, nourished and nurtured by their mothers’ love. The new world is about to burst forth, a world in which God’s reign will fall upon the earth. So what does Mary do? She sings! She picks up the ancient song of Hannah and makes it her own, weaving the old story of God’s power and love into the brand new melody that is Jesus, in whom all discord and dissonance will cease. Still her song echoes across the centuries, stirring us to faith, inviting us to pick up the tune.
