"Into the Maelstrom"
Mark 54:35-41
Lord, don’t you care? The disciples’ desperate cry gives voice to our anxiety and fear during times of trouble. When the storms of life are raging and our little crafts are buffeted by chance and circumstance, it is easy to imagine that God is far off or uncaring. It turns out, however, that he’s been with us in the boat all along. The disciples learn something about Jesus in this story, and so do we: He is the One who has power over the wind and the sea. Indeed, he is the very Word through whom creation came into being. Lord, do you not care that we are perishing? Jesus, it turns out, cares so much that we are perishing that he is willing to perish with us, for us. On the cross, the final “Peace! Be still!” will be spoken to the forces of sin, death, and the devil. With Christ in the boat with us, we can face the storms of this world in the sure and certain hope that we will reach the far shore safely.
