Prayer of the Day
Almighty and ever-living God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and love; and that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Scripture readings
Jeremiah 1:4-10
Psalm 71:1-6
1 Corinthians 13:1-13
Luke 4:21-30

Sermon
"Mirror, Mirror on the Wall"
Luke 4:21-30
Magic mirrors play an important role for Snow White, Harry Potter, and other narratives from the broad canon of fictional art. They show the future, the past, other worlds, and even speak. Mirrors will show you what you want, what you don’t want, what you could never imagine. In the real world mirrors are still handy – used for grooming, examining hard to reach places, and taking stunning photos of the universe – but they aren’t magical. Mirrors reflect only what is in front of them. Looking into a metaphorical mirror, Jeremiah saw inadequacies. Paul’s mirror is dim: reflecting only partially. Those gathered around Jesus in the synagogue saw entitlement and privilege reflected back at them. Take a long, hard look in the mirror. What do we see?

Life Together (second of two sessions)
Pastor Dave Lyle

What does it mean to live together in Christ? Surely it is more than simply occupying the same space. Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s reflections in his book “Life Together” point us in the right direction. For Bonhoeffer, life together for Christians is always lived under the Word, fed and fulfilled by the sacraments.
