Matthew 24:36-44a
Advent is here. We light candles and sing songs of expectation and wait for the end of the world. Wait, what? This first season of the church year begins not with the ancient longing that would be fulfilled by Jesus’ birth. Instead, we look for the return of that same Jesus. On that day heaven and earth will pass away, and we don’t know when that day will come. Today? Tomorrow? In a thousand years? We cannot say. But this is not cause for fear. It is, rather, reason to wake up! When Christ comes, all will be made right. Until then, it is our vocation to work for right. We beat swords into plowshares; we live honorably as in the day; we stay awake to the presence of the God who is with us now. One day this world will end, and we will walk together into God’s house. Until then, the God born in Bethlehem continues to dwell with us. In this God, all manner of things will be well.
