Sermon
"Learning to stay awake as the world is ending"
Mark 13:24–37
Advent begins and this Sunday we are greeted with images of the sun darkening, the moon has stopped giving its light, and stars falling from the sky. We are told that at that point, after these apocalyptic events have taken place, after much suffering: the Son of Man will return with great power and glory. When exactly this will all happen is still unclear… so we are told to keep alert, to stay awake, to watch. When the Son of Man comes, we do not want to be found asleep. The promise of Advent of course is that in the midst of our own suffering, our own apocalyptic events, even our own worlds ending, when it feels as though the moon has stopped giving its light….the Son of Man promises to make his presence known to us. To come and dwell with us. It is just that it may be in unexpected places, in unexpected ways, at unexpected times, when we least expect it that he arrives to offer us salvation and life again when we most need it. So, we learn to stay awake. Jesus is coming soon. We can trust his words that will never pass away.
