Prayer of the Day
O God our Father, at the baptism of Jesus you proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Make all who are baptized into Christ faithful to their calling to be your daughters and sons, and empower us all with your Spirit, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

We celebrate two baptisms on this festival day that recognizes the power of baptism in, on, and through our lives as Jesus-followers. Baptism, though, is not a single day’s event, a quickly historical action that we remember as having had happened. Baptism is a lifetime call. Through the most abundant and ordinary compound on earth, water, we are called to extraordinary things for the sake of the world and the people in it. Jesus is baptized in the wilderness to mark how ministry begins on the edges. Baptism un-circles our wagons of complacency and status quo. Just as our prayers, hopes, and dreams for the two little ones baptized today ascend to the divine, so too do we celebrate the divine descending upon them and us every single moment of our soaked and cruciform lives.
