Sermon
"Stewards of Abundance"
Matthew 25:14-30
Today, as the clock runs out on Jesus’ life and ministry, the parables of judgment continue. It is a judgment, however, wrapped in generosity. About to embark on a long journey, a man entrusts his servants with different, but all extravagant, sums of money. Two servants are bold and faithful. The third is not. The two are invited into the joy of the master. The third is very much not. To all those who have, more will be given. In baptism, this is us! We have Jesus and the promises of his gospel. But make no mistake, Jesus is not far off. He is coming, and he expects to find that we have been at work for the sake of the Kingdom. You have been given the abundance of God. Why bury it in the ground? We worship the God of resurrection; there’s no time to hide gifts in tombs or under the soil any longer.
