Holy Communion at 8:30 and 11am

Prayer of the Day
O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without you nothing is strong, nothing is holy. Embrace us with your mercy, that with you as our ruler and guide, we may live through what is temporary without losing what is eternal, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Scripture readings
Malachi 4:1-2a
Psalm 98:1–9
2 Thessalonians 3:6-13
Luke 21:5-19

Sermon
"Don’t Panic"
Luke 21:5-19
While the disciples are struck by the grandeur of the Jerusalem Temple, Jesus tells them that it will all soon fall apart. Not one stone will be left upon another. Worse, wars will rage and natural disasters will occur. Worse yet, you will suffer betrayal and isolation because of Jesus’ name. To sum up, the bad news is that there will continue to be bad news. So it is today, and so will it be until Jesus returns to put things to rights. In this in-between time, where does the gaze of faith look? Always upon Christ, crucified and raised. In him, all evil and brokenness have been put to death. In him, we see that there is life on the other side of death. The sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings, just as Malachi foretold. In the meantime, we neither ignore nor forsake our calling in this world. With hope and love we work for justice and peace, even while things fall apart, because these are the values of the kingdom that will come. The bad news remains, but not forever. The good news is simply too good.
