O God, our eternal redeemer, by the presence of your Spirit you renew and direct our hearts. Keep always in our mind the end of all things and the day of judgment. Inspire us for a holy life here, and bring us to the joy of the resurrection, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Sermon
"A Resurrection Revolution"
Luke 20:27-38
You know who doesn’t need a resurrection? The rich and powerful, that’s who. When this life is good, that’s good enough. It is not surprising, therefore, that the Sadducees didn’t believe in resurrection. They attempt to mock Jesus for his proclamation of the resurrection. They make up a joke to prove that resurrection couldn’t be real because, if it were, to whom would this childless, sevenfold widow be married? But their fictional butt-of-a-joke woman matters to Jesus, as do all of the downtrodden. Jesus declares that a woman like this would not need to be given in marriage in the resurrection, because in the resurrection her worth would no longer be determined by spouse or child. She would simply matter, because God says so. Jesus proclaims today that while it might be interesting to speculate about what our resurrection lives will look like, we can’t really know. Except for this: In the resurrection, the condescending laughter of the powerful will cease. We’ll all be on equal ground. And if that’s the case, it’s not a matter of how our earthly lives will shape our resurrected lives. It’s about how our resurrected lives shape our living here, today.

Retirement, the beginning of a new stage in life, can be a stressful time, but it can also provide an opportunity for spiritual repositioning and a change in emphasis from Doing to Being. This session is intended not just for those undergoing this transition, but also for those who want to learn how to support and encourage parents, grandparents, and friends in their journey into life.
