Sermon
"Whose Image?"
Matthew 22:15-22
Things are speeding up now. By this point in the story, Jesus’ proclamation of love and forgiveness has angered pretty much everyone. It’s even brought together the Pharisees and the Herodians, two groups that were in direct opposition to one another over the issue of Roman occupation. Jesus is a threat to them both, so they try to trap him with their famous question about taxes. Will Jesus offend the emperor or anger the crowds? Neither. Jesus acknowledges that we live in a world of empires; we can’t simply opt out of them. But Caesar can only mark coins. We are more powerfully marked than that. Redeemed by Christ, we might not be able to opt out of empires, but we can change them from within.
