Sermon
"It Is Right to Give Our Thanks"
Luke 17:11-21
“What do you say?” Like many other parents, I ask my children this question to remind them to say, “thank you.” The practice of good manners, like the habit of eating the broccoli on their plate, does not come naturally to children. While we may learn societal norms and develop good manners, gratitude doesn’t come easily for the rest of us, either. It is tempting, therefore, to read today’s story as a moral tale. Jesus has done good things, so what do we say? But this leads us down the path of turning the gospel into a new law. Of course we should say thank you to God, but that’s not the point. The point is that we, like the ten lepers, were as good as dead. And Christ, for no reason but grace, called us back into life. Life lived in Christ doesn’t mean that we should say thank you; it means that we can’t help but run back to him, fall at his feet, and give him our lives. It’s not just the right thing to do; it’s the only response that makes sense.
