Prayer of the Day
Almighty and eternal God, you show perpetual lovingkindness to us your servants. Because we cannot rely on our own abilities, grant us your merciful judgment, and train us to embody the generosity of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

"God Being God"
Matthew 20:1-16; Jonah 3:10-4:11
Sinners and slackers. From the streets of Nineveh to the landowner’s vineyard, we are confronted today with deeply human stories. What is most human, however, is neither the sinning nor the slacking; it is the response of the hardworking, the righteous. When God shows mercy and generosity, they get angry. There goes God again, steadfast in love and slow to anger, handing out forgiveness and abundance to anyone, no matter how little they deserve it. The gospel constantly confounds our idea of fairness. God insists upon grace, giving Jesus to guarantee it. Perhaps we should stop worrying about whether or not we’re getting our fair share and focus instead on working to make sure our neighbors have enough. That’s what the kingdom of heaven is like.
