Sermon
"By All Accounts"
Luke 16:1-13
Our relationship with money and possessions is probably the most complicated relationship we have. Or perhaps it isn't all that complicated. There's no doubt that we love money, and we hate when we feel we don't have enough money. So it's really pretty simple, isn't it? Jesus speaks a clear message to us in the Gospel today: "You cannot serve God and wealth." We might think we're safe here, that there's no way we would serve wealth over serving God. We might think that our tithes and offerings are great examples of that. We give our money to God, so we're serving God! Right? But perhaps we should also consider the words of the rich man at the beginning of our Gospel today: "Give an account of your management." If we took a good hard look at our own management of our wealth, what would we find our wealth truly serving? This is where it gets complicated ... but the good news is, it doesn't have to be. The riches of this world are fleeting and dishonest, in that they lure us from the true riches and eternal home that Jesus promises await us. We are constant recipients of the riches of God's abundant love, and in this, all earthly wealth finds renewed meaning. So, how is your relationship with your money? Take a good account of it. And then, take account of God's love for you, noticing how that love changes everything--even your money.
