"Payback"
Matthew 18:21-35
Forgive one another? Sure, Jesus. But surely there are limits! Listen to the story: There was a king who had a servant in his debt; not for a few bucks but for an astronomical amount. It would have been laughable had it not been so serious. The servant asks for more time, but the king gives him something even greater: pity. The king does not respond to the servant’s laughable offer to repay an unpayable debt. Instead, the king has a change of heart. He gets out of the debt-collecting business altogether! The king writes off his losses and moves on. It’s so ludicrous from a worldly point of view that the servant himself doesn’t get it, but maybe we will. God has forgiven you, has written off your sin for the sake of Christ. Why would you keep living by the old accounting?
