Prayer of the Day
Direct us, O Lord God, in all our doings with your continual help, that in all our works, begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy name; and finally, by your mercy, bring us to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.  Amen.

"On the Basis of Love"
Luke 14:25-33; Philemon 1-21
How much will it cost? This is a common question in our house. We try to be responsible, prudent. Jesus invites us today to count the cost of following him. What will it cost? Discipleship could cost us our relationships, our possessions, even our lives. Why, then, would we want to follow Jesus? Because cruciform living is the only life worthy to be called life. We could, like the Israelites, choose death instead of life. We could, like Philemon, be tempted to choose power and authority. But Jesus invites us to take up the cross and follow him into the life that is really life. It is a life that puts Christ and his cross at the center. It is a life that no longer has room for distinction or rank. It is a life in which slaves are set free, in which we no longer have a claim upon one another except for the claim that Christ has upon us all. It is a life driven by love; not the greeting card kind of love, but a sacrificial love that gives everything away.

Education hour at 9:45am

Sunday School,  Pre-Confirmation, and  Confirmation activities resume on September 8. Students age 3 through kindergarten meet in the JK room, grades 1-6 in the gym, and grades 7-8 in the school Learning Center. Parents and teachers gather in Fellowship Hall.
